Imran Khan breaks silence on comparisons with Ranbir Kapoor

May 29,2024

In a detailed interview with an Indian media outlet, Imran Khan opened up about how the media often depicted him and Ranbir Kapoor as rivals. This portrayal stemmed from the fact that both actors debuted around the same time and quickly became national heartthrobs. Imran shared his perspective, stating, “It’s unfortunate that this rivalry narrative always left a very unpleasant aftertaste because that’s not how I viewed it, and based on my conversations with Ranbir back then, he never bought into it either.”

Imran elaborated on his experiences, recalling, “My recollection of Ranbir is that he was incredibly serious about his craft. He is a cinephile—someone who truly loves and respects cinema. He wasn’t interested in the manufactured rivalry the media created between us.” He continued, “This kind of spicy gossip is what tabloids thrive on, and while it makes for good headlines, it leaves a bad taste for those involved. But since neither Ranbir nor I entertained these stories, it never became an issue between us. Occasionally, when some particularly nasty rumors surfaced, we would make it a point to reach out to each other and say, ‘Listen, this has happened. Are we cool?’”

Reflecting on their careers, it’s clear that both actors made significant impacts when they entered the Bollywood scene. Ranbir Kapoor made his debut in November 2007 with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s romance musical ‘Saawariya.’ This film also starred Sonam Kapoor and Rani Mukerji and was highly anticipated due to Bhansali’s reputation for crafting visually stunning and emotionally rich films. Despite ‘Saawariya’ receiving mixed reviews, Ranbir’s performance was praised, marking him as a promising newcomer in the industry.

On the other hand, Imran Khan’s debut came in 2008 with ‘Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na,’ directed by Abbas Tyrewala. This coming-of-age romantic comedy starred Genelia D’Souza alongside Imran and was a huge commercial success. The film’s relatable story, catchy music, and the chemistry between the lead actors resonated with audiences, cementing Imran’s status as a rising star.

Despite their concurrent rise to fame and the media’s efforts to pit them against each other, both actors maintained a respectful and professional relationship. Imran’s reflections in the interview shed light on how the entertainment industry can often create fictional narratives for the sake of sensationalism, but real-life relationships can differ significantly from these portrayals. This conversation between Imran and the media outlet not only highlights the camaraderie between him and Ranbir but also offers a glimpse into the often unseen dynamics between actors in Bollywood.
